In the radio world, we always strive to get the largest audience that we can. Unfortunately, this is difficult to achieve. It you are passionate about one type of music, you must understand that not everyone enjoys your particular genre or style. Large corporations that own many radio stations, usually only care about selling advertising so they choose to cater to a very young audience.
I have a passion for oldies. Songs that go back to the fifties through the 80's. This includes lots of different types of songs. Some people may enjoy the 70s while some love the 60's. Gaining an audience that doesn't tune out when they hear a 50's song or tune out when they hear an 80's song can be quite difficult. I choose not to limit the music to one or two decades. Oldies are so diverse and there are so many great songs that would otherwise be excluded.
We have to be careful when making format modifications. I recently made two modifications at Edgewater Gold Radio. I've added a classic disco show on Saturday nights and I just added a classic hits show to the evening and part of the overnight. This can be a bit risky but I'm keeping with the overall main format "OLDIES." My reasoning for adding classic hits is that during the day and early evening, our core audience is from the United States but that changes during the overnight where the audience is mainly in other parts of the world. Playing classic hits at night "rounds out the format" and offers another source for music for an audience who may be a bit younger.
Internet radio with it's reporting features enables us to really see how slight changes affect the audience. I can easily see the audience go up or go down all over the world. It makes programming changes much easier than with terrestrial radio who rely on companies like Arbitron for ratings.
