Internet Radio Listenship is Up, AM/FM Listenership is Down

According to Statistica, internet radio listenership is way up from 2007 - 2021 and reasons why AM/FM is way down in 2021. Here are their findings.

The reach of online radio in the United States has increased sharply in the last decade, with 68 percent of the U.S. population having listened to the online radio in the past month in 2021, compared to 34 percent ten years previously. Weekly online radio consumption among U.S. listeners has also increased, growing from 12 percent in 2007 to 62 percent in 2021.

According to a study from early 2021 on the reasons for listening to less AM/FM radio in the U.S. and Canada, 71 percent of respondents stated that they listen to less AM/FM radio because they spend less time in a car, and 62 percent cited a lifestyle change as a reason for reduced radio consumption. The decline in radio listenership was also found to be due to repetitive music, changes in format, the increase in streaming service opinions and a lack of enjoyment or ability to find preferred content.
