John Lennon's former Beatles bandmates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr as well as his wife Yoko Ono paid tribute to the legendary musician on Tuesday, which marked the 40th anniversary of his death.

"A sad sad day but remembering my friend John with the great joy he brought to the world. I will always be proud and happy to have known and worked with this incredible Scouser," McCartney wrote on Twitter.

"Tuesday, 8 December 1980 we all had to say goodbye to John peace and love John," Starr tweeted. The Beatles drummer called on every radio station in the world to play the Grammy Hall Of Fame winning classic "Strawberry Fields" sometime Tuesday.

"Forever. Peace and love," he added in the background of a photo of both of them sitting in front of a car.

The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience, according to Yoko Ono. "After 40 years, Sean, Julian and I still miss him. 'Imagine all the people living life in peace,'" Lennon's widow wrote.

Lennon's children, Sean and Julian, also took to Twitter on Tuesday, sharing black and white photos in memory of the late singer and songwriter.
