Small, Local Station? Uniqueness is Priceless!

Edgewater Gold Radio is a local internet only radio station here in southern Delaware. Our audience is very diverse and covers all of the US and Canada and the world. I mentioned this before. The way I keep a local flavor is offer local weather, transportation information and information about local events. These features can be offered as part of our 24 hour music format. The key to retaining an international audience is to not stop the music for too long because many listeners are from outside the state of Delaware. I always keep in the back of my mind that our listeners are mainly listening for the music. So airing a talk show will NEVER happen as it will alienate most of our listeners an

Internet Radio - Setting the Encoder up Correctly

You have spent days ,weeks even months setting up your internet radio station. Everything is ready to go and you begin to set up your encoder ...all of a sudden, confusion sets in. What do these settings mean? Your stream provider supplies you with parameters to enter into your radio automation software to enable live broadcaster. You first must make sure that you understand "what goes where." If you're confused, contact you stream provider, send a snapshot of the encoder screen on your automation software and let them tell you the correct coding. I once had a terrible time connecting because I didn't understand what the "administrator password was." I tried everything until I contacted my s

Roger Daltry Thinks the New Who Album is the Best Since Quadrophenia.

Here's the latest from RTT News on what Roger Daltry thinks about the new WHO album. The Who frontman Roger Daltrey thinks that the band have made their "best album since Quadrophenia." Speaking during a Q&A at pop-up shop The Who @ 52, Daltrey said he was initially skeptical about the band's new album, but it changed later and he became "incredibly optimistic." The upcoming album is Who's 12th studio album and a follow-up to 2006's Endless Wire. "When I first heard the songs I was very skeptical as I didn't think I could do it," Daltrey explained. "I thought Pete had written a really great solo album and I said to him, 'Pete, what do you need to do this for? Release it as a solo album, it's

Saved By The Cloud

Radio stations always faced the dreaded possibility of going off the air. During my radio career, this happened many times, due to weather conditions as well as equipment failure. A few days ago, there was a power failure in my home, due to a faulty breaker on the box outside. I was sitting outside on my deck talking to a friend and listening to my station Edgewater Gold Radio. My partner came outside and told me that the power was out. The first thing I said was "the radio station is still playing." Then I realized, that as soon as the power went out, Edgewater Gold Radio automatically began broadcasting from the cloud. As part of my backup systems, I've uploaded music, rotations and other

Volunteering For Internet or LPFM Radio

You've been in radio for years now want to help out or work for an internet or Low Power FM station. Expect to get paid? Forget about it! Internet and Low Power radio stations have very low budgets, are usually not for profit and sometimes have difficulty keeping up with everyday costs. So if money is a priority for you, forget about Internet or LPFM. As most of us in radio know, even working for commercial stations doesn't usually reap monetary benefits. We love the industry, in most cases we love music and love sharing our passion with others. If this is the case volunteering at an LPFM station or internet radio station can be just as satisfying. They say we "radio people" have radio in ou

Three Great Artists Team Up For Tour!

Three artists that we grew up with are teaming up for a great tour this September. Here's the story from RTT news. Todd Rundgren, Micky Dolenz, and Christopher Cross have teamed up to embark on a tour, called "It Was 50 Years Ago Today," to celebrate the Beatles' White Album, which was released 51 years ago. The trio will be joined by Chicago's Jason Scheff and Badfinger guitarist Joey Molland. In addition to songs from White Album, the stars will perform some of their own hits. Although the tour is "not affiliated or endorsed by the Beatles individually or collectively," as the tour poster points out, the artists have Beatle connections, having been associated with the band at some point. T

Radio, not Bound By Studio's Anymore

Just about 30 years ago, if we were hired as a DJ or announcer for a radio station, we drove to the studio and spent 4 or 5 hours in the studio broadcasting a live show. There was really no automation and announcers, DJ's and engineers had to generate each element manually. This was a very tiring task. Full time radio stations were manned 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In today's world, radio stations are automated or at least partially automated. The internet has enabled DJ's or announcers to do their show without having to leave their home. Many radio staff members don't even live in the area where the station is located. Yes this is a great convenience but most of my great radio memori

Who's the Washed Up Psycho???

Another "class act" by Donald Trump! While over in Great Britain,he managed to trash Bette Midler. Really he will go down as the craziest, unstable so called President in US history if not in world history! Here's the story from RTT news! U.S. President Donald Trump has lashed out at Bette Midler, calling the award winning singer, actress, comedienne and activist a "washed up psycho" after she apologized for an incorrect tweet. "Washed up psycho @BetteMidler was forced to apologize for a statement she attributed to me that turned out to be totally fabricated by her in order to make 'your great president' look really bad. She got caught, just like the Fake News Media gets caught. A sick scamm

The Importance of Radio Imaging

There are so many times when I turn on a radio station or radio stream and hear nothing but music. One song after another without any identification. As soon as the dial or station is changed away goes the music and away goes the memory of where it came from. Imaging is extremely important in radio broadcasting. Some stations care concerned with repetition. This should never be an issue. Imaging should be creative and consist of multiple recordings. Imaging should also be programmed frequently and consistently. Listeners need to know what they are listening to. Radio is NOT a jukebox. Put forth an effort and make your station sound great!
